How do I soften a pelt?

I recently got a tanned coyote pelt from ebay for a costume I’m working on. It still has its feet, claws, and ear cartilage and its a really nice pelt (after airing it out for a bit), but its face is rather hard still. Not extremely hard but enough that it would make it hard to make a hat or mask out of it.

I called around and have been suggested multiple things, but I’m not sure what to go with because I’m afraid I’ll ruin the pelt. Any suggestions?

1) Mink oil – could make it really oil and just not work
2) Neatsfoot – "
3) Tumble dry no heat – I don’t think it has enough weight to break in the face on its own
4) Re-hydrate, shape, let harden – it could possibly fall apart on me

I use saddle soup and mink oil should do the same don’t Soak a little goes a long ways

Tiff’s mink hunter hats

This is what we came up with for Tiff’s steampunk character. There is a mink on the outer hat that is wearing a hat, then there is a smaller top hat under it which has a mink skull on it. Under the small top hat is a mink skull wearing a top hat. So her bow is a two step process. I will get video of her bowing at a group of people.
